likeapairofbottlerockets asked: Just wondering, what cracks (in Robyn's persona) are you referring to? Though I do get mad about this issue because I really don't like Katy Perry as an artist, I I understand why people like her. I can enjoy her songs occasionally. I just think Robyn is far superior as an artist and that it's kind of a different category of art when you are only a performer and not a songwriter....

Katy Perry and Robyn aren’t so different after all. Honest.
Warning: I am very passionate about this, the following rant is not meant as a personal attack on any person.
I can’t buy this. I totally agree that female artists are automatically pitted against each other while male artists aren’t. I don’t think Katy Perry’s music is inherently “fake” because of...

Frustration Rock
douglasmartini:
I understand why reviews like this exist, and sometimes they are necessary for breaking down the walls of male-dominated music criticism. But my primary pet-peeve with this sort of mentality is that there are music writers that give a shit about feminism! I think I do a decent job at judging bands with women by the same merits I judge all-male bands by.
Maybe the author of that...

Popcorn Noises: One more thing about the Grammys... →
popcornnoises:
If you take a quick look through past Album of the Year winners, you’ll see that there have only been two hip-hop albums (Lauryn Hill and Outkast) and the last time a predominantly dance-heavy electronic pop album won was, uh, Thriller in 1984. So historically, Em and Gaga never stood a chance.
In light of these facts, I have decided that Arcade Fire winning—while nice for them...

Also.
I’ll post a video analysis on Friday, but it won’t accurately express my own take on the song because 1) I’ve decided to auto-fail all lyrics with “love” or “god,” and 2) the videos never do, which is pretty much the point.
So I have to say this somewhere. Here’s a quote from Thought Catalog’s review of “Born This Way.” (Emphasis...
Am I the only one who remembers things a bit...
I always saw the “Firework”s and the “We R Who We R”s and the “Raise Your Glass”es as pages out of the Gaga playbook. So when I read things about how “Born This Way” is “yet another It Gets Better anthem,” I’m honestly confused. How did Gaga become a bit player in her own ideology?

I like reading reviews as well. But I would have to somewhat disagree with you on the assertion that music is not ‘good’, based on whether they’ve listened to a lot of music or not.
Good music has equal parts familiarity and equal parts of surprise. Too much familiarity and it’s boring. Too much surprise and it sounds like ‘Twelve tone row’ music.

bloodletters asked: But surely Nick S. isn't saying that people shouldn't interrogate their tastes, or allow other people to interrogate them? Just that there are different ways to go about it, and the one that leads to the situation below, no matter how funny it might be, is probably not the best approach:
